High Point Road

While at work today, I saw upon the Environment Canada doppler radar that a well developed snow squall was blowing down from Georgian Bay and across our neck of the woods. Having the opportunity to leave early (as I was pretty much the only one in during work's mid-winter break) I chose to do so and venture up onto the Oak Ridges Moraine on my way home, driving along snow-covered roads and through windy white conditions.

Something that was espied the last time I drove up Ashburn Road towards High Point Road was this cluster of old telephone booths, just off the road.

I tramped through the snow for a closer look and to hopefully snap some pictures of the details. I thought the reds made for an interesting contrast with the snow with this booth.

I like this one, showing the detail of the inside of another booth. It turned out really well.

I was trying to capture the detail of the crown here. I had to hold the camera up in the air with my arms outstretched to take this. It didn't help that the wind was blowing in my face.

Leaving the phones booths, I made my way to High Point Road. This is one of my favourite places to stop on the road, as there are great views on both sides of the road.

I'm a bit disappointed at how this turned out, looking south across the rolling fields. I think I needed to be closer to the gate and at a slightly different angle to get the contrast I was aiming for between the bright red gate and the snow blanketed hills, with that lone tree in the distance offering a counterpoint. I'll have to go back and try it again.

Looking north, there are a number of places to stop and take pictures of the valley with the fence line running down the middle of it. This one is kind of interesting, but might be a bit too busy with all the branches. When I return to this spot, I'll take some more of this scene from some different vantage points for comparision.

As the road meanders east, it passes between a number of farms. This fine fellow was grazing on those pitiful bushes by the fence when I approached. Thankfully, he cooperated and struck a pose for me.

The Ocala Estate Winery is located on High Point Road, so I thought I'd stop in and pick up a bottle of Meritage red for later. Much to my surprise, they're closed on Mondays and Tuesdays in the winter. I grabbed a quick shot of the barn, the wind whipping snow directly into my face. The squall was definitely getting heavier, so I made a bee line for home.

A very slow bee line, as it turned out, for as I made my way along Smith Sideroad, the conditions worsened to near whiteout conditions. This picture illustrates one of clearer moments along the way.
